Generation Amazing Foundation and Afghan Refugee Crisis: Football as Tool for Development

The Generation Amazing Foundation is a Qatari initiative launched in 2010 with the aim of using football as a tool for social and human development. The foundation also played a key role in resolving the Afghan refugee crisis through the following activities:

Collaboration and Activities for Afghan Refugees

  1. The Generation Amazing collaborated with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy to provide support to Afghan refugees in Qatar, organizing daily activities and events at their temporary residences in Doha.
  2. Since their arrival, Generation Amazing has organized youth-oriented initiatives to promote values such as gender equality and social inclusion, providing a safe environment that promotes skills development and allows for productive leisure time.
  3. In cooperation with the Children’s Library, Generation Amazing provided a wide range of educational activities, as well as psychological and social support programs for Afghan refugees of all ages. Hassan Al-Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, expressed his happiness with these activities and their contributions.

Sports Initiatives for Refugees

  1. Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar hosted a friendly match between the Afghanistan women’s national football team and a team of Qatari female players to reinforce values of human solidarity and unity. This was the Afghan team’s first match since their arrival in Qatar as part of evacuation efforts.
  2. Training courses were organized for Afghan women’s football and basketball coaches as part of Generation Amazing’s strategy to use sports as a tool for development and positive change.

Humanitarian Support and Accommodation

  1. Qatar provided continued humanitarian support and shelter to Afghan refugees, including women’s football team players. The Qatari Assistant Foreign Minister, Lolwah Al-Khater, praised the local and international institutions that helped care for refugees and organized events.
  2. Temporary and safe accommodation was provided for Afghan refugees within the buildings of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Daily activities were organized with support from Generation Amazing and volunteers.
  3. Cooperation with Various Institutions: Generation Amazing worked with the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qatar Foundation, and the Children’s Library to provide educational experiences for refugees. Over 420 workshops were held through this collaboration.

Psychological and Social Support

The Generation Amazing provided quick response support to promote psychological resilience among Afghan refugees. By using football to enhance communication and community engagement, the foundation helped support the mental health of refugees, as emphasized by Nasser Al-Khoury, Director of Program Management at the foundation.

Through continuous and tireless efforts, Generation Amazing has successfully used football to provide social and mental support to Afghan refugees.
