The Qatari Ministry of Education and its role in addressing the Afghan refugee crisis

The Qatari Ministry of Education put in a great deal of effort to support Afghan refugees and provide them with the necessary educational services, as it carried out activities that included the following:

  1. Qatari students devoted their evenings to activities for Afghan refugee children, which helped the Qatari students understand the situation comprehensively. Before participating in these activities, the Qatari students used to follow what was happening on television, and this did not enable them to fully understand the situation. However, their work with refugee children directly contributed to their understanding and awareness.

“I have spoken to many high school graduates over the past few years, and when asked about memorable moments during their studies, they often mention the volunteer services they participated in,” said Charmaine Viljoen, creativity, activism and service program coordinator at Qatar Academy.

  1. The Qatar Scholarship for Afghans Project was one of the programs implemented in the education sector to support the Afghan people. In the first batch, the project aimed at receiving 250 Afghan refugee students in American colleges and universities.
  2. Hosting the World Innovation Summit for Education, WISE, and calling for the need to reach children in conflict zones or during disease outbreaks.
  3. The Education Above All Foundation launched programs to spread education, including a program to teach English to Afghan refugees in order to help them adapt to their host countries.

Through such tireless efforts, the Qatari Ministry of Education has contributed to providing various educational services to Afghan refugees, which further proved the ministry’s ability to face crises as an institution.
